The Ritual of Repentance
A simple ritual of repentance at home, with Water of Repentance. You need nothing but silence, the bottle and sincerity – and if you don't have the bottle, the ritual can be done with plain water. The water is an aid, not a condition.
Before the ritual
What you will need
The bottle, a bowl or a sink, a clean towel and about ten minutes without interruption.
When
Whenever you feel something weighing on you. Many choose the evening, when the day is behind them. It is not about frequency – it is about sincerity.
Where
Anywhere you can be alone. A bathroom is perfectly fine.
Water of Repentance
Five steps
- 1
Be still
Sit or stand in silence. Take a few slow breaths. Let the day, the phone, the noise go. This time belongs to you and to what you want to say.
- 2
Ask for forgiveness
Begin with a request. In your own words: "Lord, I ask You for forgiveness." It does not have to be beautiful or long. It has to be yours.
- 3
Name your sins
Say them. One after another, specifically: not "I was bad", but what you did, to whom, and how it hurt. Do not soften, do not explain, do not blame the circumstances. If the words won't come, it is fine to cry or stay silent – that too is a confession.
- 4
Wash your hands with the water
Pour a little Water of Repentance into your palms or a bowl and slowly wash your hands. Feel the water. Let this gesture be your "yes" to what you have just said: I regret it and I want to be clean. A small amount is enough – about one or two tablespoons.
- 5
Pray
While washing, slowly say the prayer of repentance. Don't recite it – say it.

If you don't know where to start: guiding questions
Most people don't fail at remorse; they fail at knowing what to say. Go through these questions slowly. You don't have to answer all of them – only the ones where something stirs.
- Whom have I hurt lately – with words, with silence, or with what I didn't do?
- What did I promise and not keep?
- Where did I lie – to others or to myself?
- Whom did I judge before I listened?
- What did I take that wasn't mine: time, credit, attention, money?
- Whom have I been angry at for so long that it is hurting me too?
- What would I not want the people I love to know about me?
How often
It is not about frequency but about sincerity. Some do the ritual once a week, others when something weighs on them. One bottle lasts about eight to ten rituals. If after the ritual you feel you need to say something to someone – go and say it. That is the most important part.
After the ritual
- Dry your hands and stay in silence for a moment.
- If you have hurt someone, the ritual does not replace an apology or making amends. Take that step too – it is usually the hardest and most important part of repentance.
- If you are a believer and your church has the sacrament of reconciliation, the ritual does not replace it. It can be a good preparation for it.
- If guilt, anxiety or sadness weigh on you for a long time and you cannot cope, seek professional help. The water will not stop you from doing that – but it will not replace it either.
